6 Great Inexpensive Ways To Get Fit This Year

With annual gym membership fees running well into hundreds of dollars these days coupled with the current economic climate, joining the gym to get fit certainly seems to be a bit of a luxury right now.  Luckily the gymnasium is not the only place where you can get back in shape. In this article, you will discover 6 inexpensive, fun ways to burn those excess calories without burning a hole in your wallet at the same time.

1. Walking

This has got to be the cheapest and most readily available method of exercising. Everybody already knows how to walk and you don’t have to have any fancy shoes to do it. Just get up off your couch and go!  A brisk 30 minute walk that would raise your heart rate a few times per week will do very nicely.  Consider going for a brisk walk during your lunch break for example, to work the exercise into your day.

2. Home Gym

Unless you live in a one storey accommodation, you are bound to have stairs in your home.  So why not take advantage and use them to run up and down several times in a row to tone up your legs.  The stairs can even double as a means to work your triceps by performing small dips at the edge of a stair.  All you need to do is to sit at the edge of a stair, hands face down on either side of you and then lift yourself up and down using small movements. Keep your arms in towards your body as you do the dips. If you have tin cans of food in your cupboard and let’s face it, most people do, you can use the tin cans as weights and do arm lifts.  Small bottles of mineral water can also be used for the same purpose.

3. Exercise DVDs

This is ideal for people who don’t want to exercise in front of strangers.  There is a vast array of exercise DVDs available on the market and if you don’t want to buy your own, you can always borrow them from your local library.

4. Dancing

This is a fantastic way to burn loads of calories and incredibly fun and enjoyable too.  You can do it in your own room or you can go out and dance in clubs and parties.  Whether you choose to dance freestyle or learn a particular type of dance like hip hop, country and western, swing or latin dance is up to you!

5. Swimming

Swimming is one of the best exercises for general toning up of the body.  It is great for people with knee joint problems as you are not putting pressure on your joints in the water and is perfect whether you are young or old.

6. On Your Bike!

Cycling is environmentally-friendly, gives you a brilliant work-out and much less stressful than driving!  You can cycle to work, to the grocery store or cycle round to see friends at their homes etc.  This being the case, you can see how easy it could be to find yourself doing a bit of cycling every day.

So there you have it!  These are just a few great ways to get fit on the cheap; I hope that you feel inspired to start doing something to improve your health and fitness.  Do not forget that your diet will play a large part in your fitness program so choose your diet plan carefully.

Ways to Ride the Wave Board

The waveboard offers you more ways of riding then any board out there. The wave board is not limited to just a few riding styles. Yes you can always cruise around or bust out some sweet tricks, but there are so many more ways you can enjoy your waveboard. Let us talk about some of the more common riding styles first and then we will get into some of the more creative riding styles.

Cruising: simply riding your waveboard on flat surfaces just cruising around the streets can be a ton of fun. I took my waveboard out and rode a bike trail with my two brothers and had a complete blast. If cruising is not enough for you then try riding some hills. I started with some small hills and gradually got to larger hills the more comfortable I became. I found the best hills were long gradual sloping hills. It feels like your shredding through the snow as you carve down the hill on your waveboard. Racing: Racing is a blast on the wave board. We would set up turns and corners and race for hours. If you have many friends with wave boards you can all race at the same time. If you only have two waveboards but four people you can do relay races where you must switch the board to the other rider half way through the race.

Obstacle course: Because the wave board can turn in such tight corners you do not need a lot of space for an awesome obstacle course. My brothers and I made an obstacle course that you needed to ride over a ramp, weave through cones, do a super tight figure eight, step over a piece of wood a couple inches off the ground and the board would go under the wood, lift the waveboard wheels over a piece of wood on the ground, ride the board over a broomstick laid out the long way and cause the stick to go in between the two wheels, and all this was set up in a garage.

Ramps and freestyle: You can ride the waveboard on ramps. Try dropping in or scale the walls of a bowl. Many cities have local skate parks and I often see wave boarders out tearing it up with the skaters and bikers. You can also try some freestyle tricks like riding on one wheel, try an ollie or a kickflip. 180’s and 360’s are popular and very fun tricks on the wave board. One of my personal favorite waveboard games is waveboard chicken. Because your feet never have to touch the ground the game works like this. Each waveboard rider starts out ten to fifteen feet apart. Start riding the waveboard and when you say go you must hold your hands together behind your back and simply try to knock the other rider off of his board. The two ways you lose the round is falling off your board or letting your hands go. Holding your hands behind your back makes balancing more difficult and keeps players from using your hands to pull someone off their board.

Shoulders are legal to try and push the other riders with. Play this game with many riders and it is a blast, or just play one on one. I have also seen online where waveboard riders formed teams and played lacrosse on their boards. They set up a net and each team had to advance the ball to the other side and score. Goalies did not have boards. So in just this article I have shown you that you can cruise, ride hills, race, run obstacle courses, ride ramps and freestyle, play waveboard chicken, and if you have enough riders you can come up with great team waveboard games. Be creative in how you ride your board. The wave board is very versatile and you can ride it however you like.

The wave board is becoming as popular as skate boarding. If you have heard of street surfing, then you know what a wave board is. The popular wave board designs make the board look great, as there are many to choose from.

Ten (10) Ways To Make Your Bike Ride Relaxing And Injury Free

It is no secret that cycling is one of the best things you can do for your short and long-term health and fitness. It strengthens your cardiovascular system, it is easy on your joints and helps with weight control. But it does not matter what sport or activity you choose in your life, there are certain things that need to be done to prepare yourself physically so that the activity is as enjoyable and injury free as possible. I hope the Following tips help you achieve this goal.

1. Cyclists tend to get fatigues from squinting into the sun and wind – wearing sunglasses can resolve this issue.

2. Feet tend to swell after riding several miles. This is from the restricted circulation from sneakers – which can cause pain and tightness. Loosening shoelaces or straps near the front of the foot will either alleviate this problem or lessen the discomfort.

3. To prevent a sore neck, don’t keep your head in a fixed position. While riding, tilt your head to one side for a while and then the other – it will make for a more comfortable and natural ride.

4. It is very important and beneficial that stretching becomes part of a cyclists daily routine. Cycling is so beneficial to our body, but it does not improve range of motion or flexibility. Stretching on a regular basis can reduce muscle and joint injuries. Additional stretching prior to a long ride can make for a much more comfortable and relaxing trip.

5. To prevent numbness in the handles created by a tight grip on the handlebars for a prolonged period of time, frequently change your grip on the handlebars. Also wearing padded gloves or handlebar covers can help soften the grip as well.

6. To avoid back discomfort, replace the stem on your bike with one that has more rise until the handlebar is an inch below the top of the saddle.

7. If triceps muscles are fatigued and sore, the stem on the bike is too long. If it is too short, your shoulder muscles will be sore.

8. After a strenuous bike ride, for the last ten (10) minutes slow down the ride and avoid hills. This gives the muscles a chance to react accordingly and soreness can be significantly reduced.

9. Don’t overdress in cold weather. You may be cold the first mile or two, but your body will warm up from the pedaling. A light hat will also help contain the body heat that is lost thru the head and neck.

10. Dehydration contributes to fatigue. Drinking a swig of water or sports drink every ten (10) minutes during a strenuous ride will help keep your riding in comfort.

As you progress in your cycling and dedicate more time and energy to your rides, additional preparation and precautions will have to be taken. I will be addressing those in another future article for advanced cyclists. But the tips above apply to all cyclists – from a beginner to a racer – and they are important for your own comfort and safety.
